Battle of Santa Fe

The Battle of Santa Fe occurred on August 15, 1846 during the Mexican-American War. General Stephen Watts Kearny moved out of Fort Leavenworth with roughly 1,700 men in the Army of the West . His objective was to march cross country into California. He first met Mexican forces at Santa Fe in August. However without firing a shot Mexican general Armejo was forced to evacuate the city and it was thus occupied by Kearny. From Santa Fe, Kearny sent Colonel Alexander Doniphan south into Mexico. Kearny became the military governor of the New Mexico Territory on August 18 and established a civilian government there before he took the remainder of his army and moved on to California.
