Beaches—East York

(Redirected from Beaches—Woodbine)

Beaches—East York is a political riding in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The riding combines two notable city neighbourhoods: The Beaches and East York. This political boundary is an area used for both provincial and federal representation; municipally it is divided into two halves, with a councillor for The Beaches (Ward 32) in the south, and one for East York (Ward 31) to the north.

Municipally the riding is currently held by councillor Janet Davis in Ward 31 and deputy mayor Sandra Bussin in Ward 32.

Both provincially and federally the riding has been historically a political stronghold for the New Democratic Party. Despite this, the riding has been held federally by a Liberal member and former cabinet minister, Maria Minna, since 1993. In the 2004 election, Minna won a tight race over NDP candidate and former head of Greenpeace, Peter Tabuns, to keep her seat. The riding was called Beaches—Woodbine until 1997.
