Beachwood is a city located in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 12,186.

Geography

Beachwood is located at 41°28'56" North, 81°30'14" West (41.482226, -81.504001).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.7 km² (5.3 mi²). 13.7 km² (5.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.19% is water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 12,186 people, 5,074 households, and 3,181 families residing in the city. The population density is 891.1/km² (2,307.5/mi²). There are 5,447 housing units at an average density of 398.3/km² (1,031.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 86.50% White, 9.08% African American, 0.08% Native American, 3.21% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 0.97% from two or more races. 0.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,074 households out of which 24.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.0% are married couples living together, 5.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.3% are non-families. 35.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 23.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.20 and the average family size is 2.86.

In the city the population is spread out with 19.7% under the age of 18, 3.0% from 18 to 24, 17.2% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 35.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 52 years. For every 100 females there are 78.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 71.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $65,406, and the median income for a family is $86,632. Males have a median income of $71,829 versus $35,375 for females. The per capita income for the city is $40,509. 4.3% of the population and 2.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.3% of those under the age of 18 and 5.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Over 80% of the population is of the Jewish faith.

Education

The Beachwood education system is a Blue Ribbon awarded school. Beachwood is ranked amongst the Top 50 schools in Ohio. Beachwood schools have the advantages of a large tax base and a high percentage of private school students (both religious schools and private academies like University School ). The school is constantly being renovated and added to, recently an addition was made to the science wing. The classes offered at Beachwood range from Cooking to AP Physics and beyond. The many clubs found at BHS are Academic Challenge, Robotics, Israeli Culture Club, Amnesty International, Frisbee Club, etc. The sports offered at the High School include football, soccer, cross country, tennis, basketball, volleyball, wrestling, swimming, track, baseball and lacrosse. The school excels in wrestling and track with individual athletes advancing to the state championships.

The Middle school was recenetly renovated, and now all students have their own Apple Laptops. Due to its advanced technology and technological advancements it recently won an award from Intel.
