Belovár-Körös


Belovár-Körös is the name of a historic administrative county (comitatus) of the Kingdom of Hungary, autonomous region Croatia-Slavonia. Its territory is presently in northern Croatia. Belovár and Körös are the Hungarian names for the cities Bjelovar and Križevci, respectively. The capital of the county was Bjelovar (Croatian, in Hungarian: Belovár).

Geography

Belovár-Körös county shared borders with the Hungarian counties Somogy, Verőce, Pozsega, Varasd, and Zágráb (the latter three in Croatia-Slavonia). The river Drave formed its north-eastern border. Its area was 5048 km² around 1910.

History

The territory of Belovár-Körös county became part of the Kingdom of Hungary in the 12th century. Belovár-Körös county was formed in 1886 from the former counties Belovár and Körös. In 1918 (confirmed by the Treaty of Trianon 1920), the county became part of the newly formed Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (Yugoslavia). Since 1991, when Croatia became independent from Yugoslavia, the county is part of Croatia.
