Benjamin Holt
Benjamin Holt invented the first practical caterpillar track for use in tractors. The caterpillar type track is used to spread the weight of heavy agricultural and engineering vehicles out over a large area to prevent the vehicle from sinking into the mud. In the industry, the proper vernacular is "Low Ground Pressure" or "LGP for short.
Sinking into the mud was a common problem in peat soil surrounding Stockton, California where Holt made his residence. Holt's invention allowed practical cultivation on an industrial scale on the rich peat land.
Holt's formed the Holt Manufacturing company in the early 20th century. His invention led to the invention of the modern military tank. Holt Manufacturing later merged with C.M. Best to form the Caterpillar Tractor Company.
