Bette Stephenson
Dr. Bette M. Stephenson is a medical doctor and Ontario politician.
Born in Aurora, Ontario, she attained her medical degree from the University of Toronto. Dr. Stephenson practiced medicine for more than 40 years.
She was a founding member of the College of General Practice in Canada, now known as the College of Family Physicians Canada . She was the first female member of the board of directors of the Ontario Medical Association and the Canadian Medical Association, as well as serving as the first female president of both organizations.
Dr. Stephenson was first elected to the Ontario legislature in the 1975 provincial election representing the riding of York Mills in North York. She served as a cabinet minister in the Ontario provincial government of Premier Bill Davis first as minister of labour from 1975 until 1978 and then as both Minister of Education and Minister of Colleges and Universities from 1978 until Davis' retirement in 1985.
In 1985, she became Ontario's first female finance minister in the government of Frank Miller, which was defeated in the Legislature after just five months in office. She retired from politics at the 1987 provincial election.
In the 1990s Dr. Stephenson was appointed as a Board Member on the province's new Education Quality and Accountability Office, which monitors and reports to the public on the performance of the education system. In May 1997 she was appointed Chairman of the Learning Opportunities Task Force. In recent years she has also been an advocate in favour of privately owned and financed universities.
In 1992 she was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. In 1999 she was awarded the Order of Ontario.
