Bill Archer (Manitoba politician)

Bill Archer (born 1957 in Saskatchewan) is a politician in Manitoba, Canada. He ran for the provincial legislature as a Progressive Conservative in the general election of 2003 and for the federal House of Commons as a Conservative in the federal election of 2004. He was unsuccessful on both occasions.

Archer attended Winnipeg Bible College during the 1970s. He later received an LL.B. at the University of Manitoba and became a practicing lawyer. He joined the Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba in 1988, and in 1993, he became a partner of the Archer & Phillips Law Office.

In the 1999 provincial election, Archer volunteered as a campaign worker for Cecil Thorne , the Progressive Conservative candidate in the riding of Thompson. The Progressive Conservative Party had lost much of its support in northern Manitoba during this period, and Thorne's campaign was unsuccessful.

In the 2003 election, Archer himself was the Progressive Conservative candidate in Thompson. He worked as his own campaign manager, and attempted to make an issue out of the taxation levels charged by the local school boards. By this time, the Progressive Conservative Party's organization in northern Manitoba was in a state of disrepair; Archer was unable to mount an effective campaign and received only 532 votes, against 3291 for incumbent New Democrat Steve Ashton.

In the 2004 federal election, Archer was the Conservative candidate in the northern Manitoba riding of Churchill . Once again, his party's organization in the riding was weak. He received 2999 votes, or about 15% of the total cast.
