Bill Dauterive

Bill Dauterive is a slovenly, overweight, simple-minded, divorced, Army barber at Blanda Army Base on the animated TV show King of the Hill. Previously he had been a soldier. His full name is William Fontaine de la Tour D'auterive. He comes from a rich Cajun family. In one episode, he and his friends stop at his family's mansion.

Much like the speaker in "The Raven", he pines for his ex-wife, Lenore. Bill once dated former Texas governor Ann Richards.

Like his friends and high school classmates Hank Hill, Dale Gribble, and Boomhauer, he frequently partakes of Alamo beer in the alley behind Hank's house.

Bill once stole a couch (discarded by Kahn after a cat peed on it) that he and his friends used to sit on in the alley where they drink.

The reason for Bill's physical state was thought to have been that he was an Army test subject from 1982-1984. He was apparently secretly given drugs in a project to create an elite group of artic commandos with walrus-like capabilities; they would be deployed if the Soviet Union were ever to invade the United States through Alaska. However, it later turned out that he was injected with placebos.

The character is named after King of the Hill writer and producer Jim Dauterive.

Despite possibly being the single most pathetic character in history, Bill can sometimes be inspirational. The most prominent example of this was in the episode "Dang ol' love" when his speech pulled Boomhauer out of the deppression he was in after being dumped for the first time.

Bill's speech

"I know where you are, you're in hell now Boomhauer. You're in a dark tunnel, and you're afraid to go in because there's a train coming at you, carrying a cart load full of heartbreak. But all you can do is let it hit you, and try to find your legs. I know. I've taken that hit more times than I can remember. Look at me, I'm fat, I'm bald, and every day I'm just gonna wake up fatter and balder. But every day, I manage to drag this fat, bald, bastard out of bed and into the alley. And this weekend I'm going to wait outside a women's prison and the first thing those lady cons are gonna see after being released is me. Am I gonna get one? Experience says no. Will I be there next weekend? If I'm alive you better believe it. So what you've got to do is go home, shave, wash off some of that cologne, and get yourself into some strange woman's bed!"
