Bill Pitt

William Pitt, commonly known as 'Bill', was a Liberal Member of Parliament between 1982 and 1983.

Bill Pitt ousted the Conservatives at the Croydon North West by-election of 22 October 1981 on a 24.2% swing. He stood for the SDP-Liberal Alliance and was one of a series of famous by-election triumphs during the unpopular start of Margaret Thatcher's government and the point of greatest unpopularity of the Labour Party.

He famously made a complaint on live television that someone had popped a bottle of champagne all over him. “That’s my new suit!” were his first and most famous words.

Pitt lost his seat to Conservative, Humfrey Malins, in the 1983 General Election. He went on to campaign for the Labour Party in the 1997 General Election.
