Bill Podmore
Bill Podmore (August 1931 - January 1994) was a legendary British television producer. Born in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, he was best known for his long association with the soap opera Coronation Street; a series he produced for thirteen years (1975 - 1988). This period is now widely regarded as a "golden era" in the programme's history.
He was reputedly "sacked" by Granada Television, the programme's makers, in 1988 amid a ratings crisis with rival soap, Eastenders (which at that time was in the ascendant) although he himself always maintained that the parting was amicable and that he was "retiring" of his own choosing.
Prior to this he had worked for many years producing situation comedies such as the long running Nearest and Dearest and Brass.
A former RAF pilot, he originally "cut his teeth" working as a director under the guidance of legendary soap producer, Reg Watson at ATV in the Midlands.
