Bob Bullock

Bob Bullock (July 10, 1929 - June 18, 1999) was an American politician from Texas. He served as a Democrat all his life in the Texas House of Representatives from 1957-1960, as Texas Secretary of State from 1971-1973, as State Comptroller from 1975-1990, and as Lieutenant Governor of Texas from 1991-1999 under Ann Richards and then-Texas Governor (and now President) George W. Bush.

His early life is rich in stories of drunkenness and divorces; he had a total of five marriages, although some of them were repeats. He stopped drinking in 1981 and remained active with Alcoholics Anonymous for the remainder of his life. Bullock was renowned is his role as comptroller for collecting taxes which had been previously allowed to slide, the tax officials doing such duties known as "Bullock's raiders". He was also the first elected state official to adopt an equal opportunity program.

As Lieutenant Governor, he was notable for strict non-partisanship, often telling members of the Texas Senate to leave their politics at the door. He was renowned for his politically incorrect speaking style; but also for his trademark closing line "God bless Texas."
