Box junction
A box junction is a traffic control measure which can be added to other road junctions.
A box junction is indicated by yellow crosshatching on the roadway. Vehicles are prohibited from entering this marked area unless their exit is clear. The exception to this is traffic which is turning across the oncoming flow, which is allowed to wait in the box for a gap.
Box junctions are designed to keep junctions and entranceways clear of queuing traffic. They can often be seen at busy intersections and at emergency vehicle depots.
