Brad Ward
Bradley Richard Ward is a former politician in Ontario, Canada. He was a New Democratic Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1990 to 1995, and served as a junior minister in the government of Bob Rae from 1993 to 1995.
Ward had a strong background in the labour movement before entering political life. He was employed by Bell Canada, and was a member of the Brantford and District Labour Council. He also became an executive member of the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Local 45 in 1982, and continued in this role during his time in government. In 1989, he was named Labour Citizen of the Year.
Ward served as an alderman on the Brantford municipal council from 1985 to 1990. In the 1990 provincial election, he successfully sought the NDP nomination in the riding of Brantford , held by Liberal Dave Neumann. The NDP unexpectedly won a majority government in the election, and Ward defeated Neumann by 4,192 votes.
Ward served as a parliamentary assistant from 1990 to 1993, and was named a Minister without portfolio on February 3, 1993, with responsibility for Finance . In this capacity, he served as an assistant to Finance Minister Floyd Laughren. Notwithstanding his union background, he voted in favour of the Rae government's Social Contract legislation in 1993.
The NDP government had lost much of its initial popularity by 1995, and had alienated much of its labour support base by the Social Contract and other measures. The party fell to only 17 seats out of 130 in the 1995 provincial election, and Ward finished third in Brantford against Progressive Conservative Ron Johnson and Liberal Dave Neumann. He has not sought a return to political office since this time.
Ward became an official in the CanAm Racing League after leaving politics.
