Pants

(Redirected from Breeches)

Pants are clothing for the lower body; the term comes from pantaloons.

  • In British English, the term pants refers to men's underpants. It is a catch-all term that can denote anything from thongs to boxer shorts, but all have the common feature that they are worn under trousers. The word "pants" has acquired humorous connotations in the last few decades, largely among younger people. Many stand-up comedians have used the word as a lightly pejorative term. There is a tendency to use it as an adjective. This usage came to wider attention when it came to light that the then Prime Minister John Major tucked his shirt into his underpants.
  • Pants may also be used colloquially as a verb (as in, "to pants") to describe the act of pulling a person's pants down as a sophomoric prank.
  • Breeches are a type of trousers or pants which are an article of clothing designed to cover both legs individually. The are either loose fitting and then gathered together just below the knees or they are formed and then gather just below the knees(similar to pantaloons), after which they are snug and form fitting down to the ankles. They are more commonly worn for horseback riding and are worn with high leather boots which reach the knees.
