Broadgate
Broadgate is one of the newest districts of London.
Centered on the site of the old Broad Street station that was closed in 1986, it is a modern and mainly-pedestrianised complex of offices and shops alongside Liverpool Street station and served by that station's main-line and London Underground services and those of Moorgate station.
As an 'informal' district its boundaries cannot be defined with authority but they are generally regarded as being:
- Bishopsgate to the east;
- Sun Street , Appold Street and the eastern part of Worship Street to the north;
- the southern part of Wilson Street to the west;
- Eldon Street and Liverpool Street to the south.
Several different companies have participated in the development of the estate, but since 2003 the whole estate has been owned by British Land, which has been involved since 1984. Statistics from British Land state that the estate provides 360,000 sqm (3.9mn sqft) of office, retail and leisure accommodation spread over 13ha (32 acres) and 30,000 people are employed there.
There are plans to extend the estate to the north over the railway tracks out of Liverpool Street station, but as of early 2005 construction is suspended until demand for office space in London picks up.
