Brownsville is located at 25°49'17" North, 80°14'25" West (25.821275, -80.240220).
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 14,393 people, 4,814 households, and 3,254 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 2,426.7/km² (6,275.1/mi²). There are 5,506 housing units at an average density of 928.3/km² (2,400.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 5.76% White, 91.23% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.02% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.45% from other races, and 1.30% from two or more races. 8.22% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 4,814 households out of which 34.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 21.1% are married couples living together, 39.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.4% are non-families. 27.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.98 and the average family size is 3.66.
In the CDP the population is spread out with 35.0% under the age of 18, 10.0% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 17.4% from 45 to 64, and 11.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 83.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 75.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP is $16,902, and the median income for a family is $19,703. Males have a median income of $21,098 versus $21,182 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $9,722. 42.7% of the population and 37.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 54.6% of those under the age of 18 and 33.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
