Bulla Shah

Bulla Shah also known as Baba Bulle Shah or just Bulla was a great 17th century Sufi Saint and poet who lived in the Punjab and Sindh region of the Indian subcontinent. Although a Muslim he is revered by both Muslims and Hindus in the area. He is most known for his inspirational poems called Kafis. Bulla Shah composed most of his Kafis in Punjabi.

Bulla Shah was born with a very rich legacy. He was the king of a town called Bulkh. But he soon took the path of renunciation. Putting his son at the throne he left all earthly pleasures in search of enlightenment.

Bulla's teacher on the path of enlightenment was a saint called Miyamir who lived near Lahore. Miyamir at first refused to take Bulla as his disciple and asked him to seek penance by practicing Yoga under the guidance of another fakir for twelve years. As instructed Bulla practiced Yoga under this fakir for twelve years and only after that did Miyamir accept him as his disciple.

The most popular work of Bulla Shah is the Ciharfi. Ciharfi is a collection of 30 Kafis, each starting with one of the letters of the Punjabi language in the right order.
