Butler University is a private liberal arts university in Indianapolis, Indiana (USA), founded by abolitionist and attorney Ovid Butler in 1855. It is home to over 4000 students, and occupies 20 buildings covering an area of 290 acres (1.2 km²).

Academics

Academics at Butler include over 60 degree programs in a wide range of fields ranging from business, to fine arts, to science, mathematics, and several disciplines of engineering. The university offers Bachelor's degrees in arts, fine arts, science, and music. Additionally, students can seek a graduate degrees in arts, music, science, pharmacy, and business administration.

Athletics

The school's athletic teams, known as the Bulldogs, compete in the NCAA Division I Horizon League. Butler's basketball arena, Hinkle Fieldhouse, was for several decades the site of the final rounds of the Indiana state high school basketball tournament. In 1954, it hosted the historic final where Milan High School (enrollment 161) defeated Muncie Central High School (enrollment over 1,600) to win the state title. The state final depicted in the 1986 movie Hoosiers, which was very loosely based on the story of the 1954 Milan team, was shot in Hinkle Fieldhouse.
