CARIS

CARIS is the abbreviation of Computer Aided Resource Information System, one GIS product of Universal Systems Limited, a company based in Fredericton, New Brunswick which produces GIS and hydrographic data processing software. It was founded in 1979 as a spin-off from the University of New Brunswick and initially focused on terrestrial applications in direct competition with companies such as ESRI and Intergraph but now focuses on specifc markets. It has a dominant market share in the hydrographic industry with a full range of 'ping-to-chart' applications. Other important markets include cadastral and geological GIS systems, although a range of applications are produced by CARIS including a Web Map Server.

CARIS is a member of the Open Geospatial Consortium and is a strong proponent of interoperability between different GIS systems.
