Calgary Philharmonic
The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra is a Canadian orchestra in Calgary, Alberta.
The orchestra performs its annual subscription season at the Jack Singer Concert Hall in the Calgary Centre for Performing Arts.
The group is conducted by Canadian conductor and chorus master Rosemary Thomson. Ivars Taurins is Principal Baroque Conductor and Mario Bernardi is the orchestra’s Conductor Laureate. Czech-born violinist Cenek J. Vrba is concertmaster.
History
The orchestra evolved from the first Calgary Symphony founded by violinist A.P. Howell in 1910. Members of this initial group joined with members of Mount Royal Orchestra to form a new Calgary Symphony. In 1955 the Calgary Symphony merged with the Alberta Philharmonic forming the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.
