Camarilla
The Camarilla is the official fanclub and world-wide organization affiliated with White Wolf Publishing, an Atlanta company specialized in fantasy and modern horror, but best-known for its role-playing games set in the World of Darkness, a darker version of reality in which supernaturals exist in hidden societies.
Started in the early 1990s in the United States, the Camarilla now has affiliates in many nations running a distributed role-playing game in which the thousands of players assume the roles of usually supernatural beings interacting with each other. Many of those games are run in a live-action roleplaying (LARP) environment, but the Camarilla also sponsors games running in a world-wide tabletop_role-playing_game environment.
The Camarilla has interwoven chronicles in the World of Darkness for Vampire the Requiem, Werewolf the Forsaken, Mage the Awakening and a separate Changeling the Dreaming campaign.
In an older version of White Wolf's World of Darkness, the Camarilla were a fictional society of vampires, composed of 7 clans, from the First and Second editions of Vampire: The Masquerade books and role-playing games. Their symbol is an ankh hanging from a necklace. White Wolf states, "The Camarilla is the largest sect of undead on the world. They assert that all vampires are already under their jurisdiction. (VtM3 -- p.65) The Camarilla was founded, during the 15th Century, in response to the Inquisition. The group primarily concerns itself with the Masquerade, an attempt to "hide" vampirism, from humanity. The organization is headquartered in Wien, Austria. The Camarilla is at war with the Sabbat. The Camarilla is composed of Seven main Clans; i.e. Brujah, Malkavian, Nosferatu, Toreador, Tremere, Ventrue, Gangrel. Other Clans often Affiliated Include Lasombra-Antitribu, Daughters of Cacophony, Samedi At a later stage in the storyline the Gangrel break with the Camarilla and become an independent clan.
The third edition of the game has a different clan composition and puts more emphasis on political diversity within the Camarilla, and gives hints as to the eventual dissolution of the Camarilla, which is not yet considered archaic and exists even to the declared end of the Vampire: The Masquerade line of products by White Wolf Game Studio. The third edition is not fundamentally different from the other editions, but does include more that was once published extraneously to the earlier rulebooks in associated game products.
