The Canadian national hockey team is controlled by Hockey Canada. Canada has been one of the most dominant hockey team in international play (the most dominant nowadays), winning five of six Canada Cups dating back to 1972 and winning in the 2002 Winter Olympics, and the last two International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships, as well as the 2004 World Cup of Hockey. However, Canada was able to win only four World Championships and no Winter Olympic Gold medals between 1954 and 1991 when Soviet national ice hockey team and the Czechoslovakian national ice hockey team dominated. This was because Canada's best professional players were unable to attend these events as they had commitments with their respective National Hockey League. Prior to 1977, professionals were not even allowed to play in these events. Before the emergence of the Soviet Union, Canada dominated hockey even moreso than it does today, winning six out of seven golds at the olympics before 1954 and 13 world championship gold medals before 1961.
