Canadian science fiction

A strong element in contemporary Canadian culture is rich, diverse thoughtful and witty science fiction.

Some of the most famous Canadian writers of science fiction include William Shatner, Margaret Atwood, James Cameron, John Clute, James Doohan, James Alan Gardner, William Gibson, H.L. Gold, Judith Merril, Garfield Reeves Stevens , Judith Reeves Stevens and A. E. van Vogt.

James Doohan and William Shatner, of course, are known not only for their writing but also for their acting roles in Star Trek. Doohan is also a linguist, and devised the Vulcan and Klingon language dialogue heard in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Over the next 20 years, other linguists expanded Klingon into a full language of its own.

Amongst well-known Canadian filmmakers who've done sci-fi are James Cameron, David Cronenberg, Lex Gigeroff and Norman Jewison.

Famous Canadian actors who played popular science fiction roles include Dan Aykroyd, John Candy, Jim Carrey, James Doohan, Michael J. Fox, Lorne Greene, Leslie Nielsen, Walter Pidgeon, Christopher Plummer, Michael Shanks, William Shatner, Martin Short, Donald Sutherland, Kiefer Sutherland, Amanda Tapping, Lexa Doig, Laura Bertram, Keanu Reeves, Kristin Kreuk and Carrie-Anne Moss.

Some of the most popular science fiction TV shows watched in the United States and Britain are made in Vancouver, British Columbia, sometimes called the Hollywood of the North.
