Candy Apple Grey is the penultimate album by Hüsker Dü, released in 1986, and their first for a major label. The album marks the completion of their transition from a hardcore punk band to a more rounded, alternative rock outfit; whilst there are still signs of earlier, more frenetic output (Crystal), it also features more introverted material. Piano and acoustic guitar appear on a Husker Du album for the first time.

Candy Apple Grey features very strong songwriting for the genre; Bob Mould and Grant Hart both contribute arguably some of their best work ever here. Production is improved over previous releases, but is still rather top-heavy.
