Capitals of Hungary
During the history of Hungary, the country has had more capitals. These were:
Roman time
The capital of the province of Pannonia was:
- Aquincum (today Óbuda)
Later there was a fourfold division, with capitals within today's Hungary:
There were also two capitals outside of today's Hungary but on territories that were part of the Kingdom of Hungary in history:
- Siscia (Sisak/Sziszek)
- Sirmium (Sremska Mitrovica)
Hungary
Capitals of the country were:
- Székesfehérvár and Esztergom from around 1000 until 1361, but the function of a capital was not that clear as it is today
- Buda 1361-1541
- Pozsony 1541-1848 for the Kingdom of Hungary, and Gyulafehérvár for the independent Transylvania 1541-1699.
- Buda again 1848-1873, but the country was part of Austria from 1849 till 1867, so the true capital was Vienna (Bécs).
- Budapest 1873-
