Carl Chun

Carl Chun (October 1, 1852 - April 11, 1914) was a German marine biologist.

He was born in Höchst, today a part of Frankfurt, and studied zoology at the University of Leipzig where, after posts in Königsberg and Breslau, he was appointed professor for biology in 1892. He initiated and led the German deep sea expedition, which set out on August 1, 1898 from Hamburg to explore the deep sea in the subantarctic seas. They visited Bouvetøya, the Kerguelen Islands, and other islands in the area, before returning to Hamburg, where they arrived on April 30, 1899.

Chun was a specialist on cephalopods and plankton. He discovered and named the Vampire Squid (Vampyroteuthis infernalis, lit. "vampire squid from hell").

He died 1914 in Leipzig.
