Carlos José Castilho

Carlos José Castilho (born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on November 27, 1927) was a Brazilian legendary football goalkeeper. He played in Fluminense from 1947 to 1964 and in Brazil national football team. He played in 4 World Cups: 1950, 1954, 1958 and 1962 and was the starting goalkeeper in 1954.

He entered into history as a miraculous goalkeeper doing impossible saves. He was said to have unbelievable good luck - the ball often hit the post. Due to his good luck, his opponents supporters called him "Leiteria" (lucky man) and Fluminense supporters called him "Saint Castilho".

He was daltonic and he believed he was many times favored because he saw yellow balls as if they were red, though he had trouble at night with white balls.

He was an example of stoicism. Once when he injured his finger for the fifth time, and the doctor told him it would require a two months treatment, he decided to partially amputate it. Two weeks after the operation he was already playing again for Fluminense.

During his career he played in 696 games for Fluminense, an absolute record in this club. In Fluminense he suffered 777 goals and played 255 games without suffering any goal.

After his retirement from active sport, he coached many teams from Brazil.

He died tragically by committing suicide on February 2, 1987.
