Carol Cleveland

Carol Cleveland (born January 13, 1942, London, England) is a British comic actress, most notable for her appearances as the only significant woman performer on Monty Python's Flying Circus. She also appeared with Spike Milligan and on The Benny Hill Show, The Two Ronnies, and other TV shows and films. She appeared in all four seasons of the series and all five of the Monty Python movies. Privately called Carol Cleavage by the other Pythons, Carol played a caricature of the blonde bombshell stereotype. Stage directions for her first sketch described her as "a blonde buxom wench in the full bloom of womanhood". Although she did not really enjoy being restricted this way, her performances were brilliant and hilarious. She called herself the glamour stooge.

She is a former Miss California Navy and appeared as Miss Teen Queen in MAD Magazine at age 15. She also studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and now performs in a one-woman show, Carol Cleveland Reveals All.

Her mother, Pat, appeared in Monty Python on several occasions, once as a mental patient with an axe embedded in her head.

Quotation

  • "But it was my only line!" -- punchline of numerous Python sketches in which her part was cut.
