Castlevania: Lament of Innocence is a PlayStation 2 video game in the Castlevania series. Released in 2003, it is also Konami's third foray into the 3D world for the Castlevania series. The game stars Leon Belmont and takes place in 1094, making it the first chronological installment of the series.

The game begins telling the story of two warriors in medieval Europe: holy knight Leon Belmont and tactician Mathias Cronqvist. As the tale begins, Mathias' wife dies of an illness, and not a year passes before Leon's own bride, Sara , is mysteriously kidnapped.

Mathias informs Leon of a vampire who dwells in a forest called Eternal Night, so he sets off to do his courageous deeds. Before even entering the castle, he meets a mysterious old man named Rinaldo Gandolfi , who bequests Leon his whip.
