Castro Street

Castro Street is a street in San Francisco, California. Between Market Street and about 20th Street, it is at the heart of that city's gay village. The immediate area surrounding the street is also commonly referred to as "the Castro".

Further south, Castro Street also runs through the Noe Valley neighborhood, which is centered on 24th Street, before Castro Street terminates at its instersection with 30th Street.

The street was named for Joaquin Isidro de Castro, an 18th century Spanish soldier who took part in Juan Bautista de Anza's expedition to California.

Castro Street is a 1966 short documentary film which uses the sounds and sights of a city street to tell the street's own story. There is no dialogue and no people, just traffic, buildings and signs. It was directed by Bruce Baillie .

The film has been selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.

Castro Street is the main street of Mountain View, California, located about 40 miles south of San Francisco.
