This is a category of mulattos, or persons with significant African and European ancestry. According to the Columbia Guide to Standard American English, it, like the similar nineteenth and early twentieth century terms quadroon, octaroon, and half-breed, is generally deemed offensive. The Guide recommends the avoidance of these words.
