The Roman Catholic Church in the United States

The Roman Catholic Church in the United States, informally known as the American Catholic Church, is comprised of 195 ecclesiastical territories called dioceses led by prelate bishops. In the United States, state counties are used to determine diocesan territories. Dioceses led by archbishops are called an archdioceses. There are 32 archdioceses which serve as the seats of 32 metropolitan provinces of the Roman Catholic Church.

In addition to the 195 dioceses, there are several other dioceses in the nation's overseas dependencies. There are also dioceses and eparchies of the Eastern Rite. A special archdiocese was created by the Vatican for the United States military. Such bodies are also organized into metropolitan provinces of their own.

All bishops, prelate and auxiliary, are members of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.
