Yorkshire is the largest traditional county in England by area. It has a complex administrative history. The principal subdivisions are presently as follows:
- North Yorkshire is an administrative county. It is also a ceremonial county, and in this guise it includes the City of York, Middlesbrough, Redcar and Cleveland, and part of Stockton-on-Tees, which are unitary authorities for administrative purposes.
- The East Riding of Yorkshire is a unitary authority. It is also a ceremonial county, and for this purpose only it includes the unitary authority of Kingston upon Hull.
- South Yorkshire is a metropolitan county.
- West Yorkshire is a metropolitan county.
