Goal for general education
The ultimate goal for general education is the cultivation in students of basic knowledge as well as personality growth. As a part of the university funded by the state, the Center of General Education has a mission to fulfill. The Center has set up a vision of an organic triad, i.e. the integration of teaching, research, and public services. In doing so, the core values that highlight this vision, namely “Sincerity -Honest to oneself with self identity(誠)”, “Reverence -Respect to others with appreciation(敬)”, “Greatness -Endeavor with fully mighty heart (宏)”, and “Profundity- Vision and cherishment with courage(遠)”, have been taken seriously.
Setting up the root of University education
To get the goal done, we clearly identify the role of “General Education” at NKNU as a way of setting up the root of university education that includes the offering courses to match student-centered interest, catching current main stream of this era, interaction to social change, and fully cultivating the self-potential. Then, our students can learn things with applied sense, own knowledge about past and up-to-dated affairs, apply general literacy with daily life, and cultivate themselves as full of human being.
Course offering
All students at NKNU are asked to take 28 credits of general literacy course at undergraduate level before they get a bachelor degree. Those courses consist of Chinese, English, physical education, and military course at freshman level. From the perspective of campus, those courses can be provided as an aid to students before they enter to real society. For example, one must have communication literacy or cooperative ability with others, and then an organization like a company or school can accept him/her to be a member of its organization.
Faculty recruitment
The courses we offer to students are based on what we administered as a questionnaire to students in 2004. In other words, we change the courses gradually as times go by. The faculty of those courses is distributed over 5 colleges at NKNU. Some of faculty, having highly professional skills to match our requirements, are recruited from outside campus. The procedures of recruitment consist of initializing at “Center of General Eeducation”, and finalizing at university level.
