Chalatenango Department

Chalatenango is a department of El Salvador in the northwest of the country. The capital is Chalatenango . It has 2016.6 km² and more than 240,000 people called this department home.

Las Matras Archelogical Ruins which has archelogic remains of old populations and caves where there is rock writing. It was made department on February 14, 1855. It is found in Chalatenango, the "5th of November" Hydroelectric Dam near the border with Cabañas.

In this department is located the highest point of the country, El Pital with an elevation of 2730.06m
