Cheung Ching Estate

Cheung Ching Estate (長青邨) is a public housing estate on Tsing Yi Island of the New Territories of Hong Kong. It is the first public housing on the island. The estate consists of eight houses, i.e. high-rise blocks of flats, with 4905 flats. There are currently 4700 households in the estate. Other than residental blocks, the estate also provides a commercial centre with market, a community centre, a bus terminus, three primary school, a secondary school, several car parks and garages, and many playgrounds. The Chinese characters, 長青, mean long green, i.e. evergreen.

Location

Cheung Ching Estate is on mid-east side of Tsing Yi Island, near Tsing Yi Bridge (青衣大橋). It was bounded by Tsing Yi Road (青衣路), Ching Hong Road (青康路), Chung Mei Road (涌美路), and Tsing Yi Heung Sze Wui Road (青衣鄉事會路).

To the west are Mayfair Garden and Cheung Hong Estate , to the north is Chung Mei Lo Uk Village , to the east are industrial building, to the south are Rambler Crest and the Container Terminal 9 .

House

Eight houses are:

  1. Ching Wai House (青槐樓) of type Twin Tower,
  2. Ching Yung House (青榕樓) of type Twin Tower,
  3. Ching Kwai House (青葵樓) of type Old Slab,
  4. Ching Chung House (青松樓)of type Twin Tower,
  5. Ching Pak House (青柏樓) of type Twin Tower,
  6. Ching Mui House (青梅樓) of type Twin Tower,
  7. Ching Yeung House (青楊樓) of type Twin Tower, and
  8. Ching Tao House (青桃樓) of type Old Slab.

1, 2 and 3 are the lower three blocks (下三座) and after 8 was built, they are called the lower four blocks (下四座).

Commercial Centre

The Cheung Ching Commercial Centre (長青邨商場) is a 6-storey complex surrounded by Ching Yung House, Ching Wai House and Ching Kwai House. At the podium level, there are a handful of shops and a Chinese restaurant. At the market level, most shops are selling fresh food. A supermarket is at the ground floor. A garage is incorporated in the centre.

There are two clinics on the ground floor of Ching Wai House. Some NGOs also set up some facilities at Ching Yung House and Ching Kwai House.

School

Three primary schools are:

  • HKSYC&IA Chan Lai So Chun Memorial School (香港四邑商工總會陳黎繡珍紀念學校),
  • Father Cucchiara Memorial School (郭怡雅神父紀念學校), and
  • HKCSCA Cheung Chi Cheong Memorial Primary School (香港張氏宗親總會張熾昌紀念小學), formerly Wellmsher Foundation Primary School (衛理信小學).

One secondary school is:

  • Buddhist Yip Kei Nam Memorial College (佛教葉紀南紀念中學).

Community Centre

Cheung Ching Estate Community Centre (長青社區中心) is operated by various NGOs. YWCA operates one integrated centre (for youth, family, female and school), one elderly centre, and a kindergarten. Lutherian have a physically handicapped. Yan Chai have a temporary stay for pupils.

History

At early 70s, the residents of Tsing Yi Island were largely villagers and fishermen. Later, the government decided to extend the Tsuen Wan New Town to the island. Cheung Ching Estate is the first stage of new town developement. In 1977, Ching Wai House, Ching Yung House, and Ching Kwai House is first intake of residents from redevelopment of Kowloon and Hong Kong Island, and later Ching Chung House, Ching Pak House, Ching Mui House and Ching Yeung House. In the early 80s, Ching Tao House was built for the relocation of residents owing to reclamation of Tsing Yi Tong and Mun Tsai Tong .
