Chonnam National University


Chonnam National University is a major national university of South Korea. It is located in the metropolitan city of Gwangju, which lies in the middle of South Jeolla, or Jeonnam, province, for which the school is named. The current president is Kang Jung-chae. It employs about 800 professors. In 2003, the university carried an undergraduate enrollment of 18,397, and a graduate enrollment of 3,372.

Academics

Undergraduate offerings are divided among 15 departments: Business Administration, Engineering, Agriculture & Life Sciences, Law, Education, Social Sciences, Human Ecology , Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy, Arts, Medicine, Humanities, Natural Sciences, Dentistry, and the Division of General Studies. Of these, Engineering is by far the most popular, with more than 4,000 enrolled.

Postgraduate offerings are divided between the General Graduate School and five specialized schools offering master's-level degrees.

History

The school opened, as a university with five colleges, in 1952. The graduate school was opened in the same year.
