Clare is a city located in the U.S. state of Michigan. The city lies mostly within Clare County, though a portion extends south into adjacent Isabella County. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,173.
North-south U.S. Highway 127 forms the eastern boundary for much of the city and has a junction with east-west U.S. Highway 10 on the east side of the city. US 10 connects with Midland, 33 miles to the southeast, and with United States Highway 131 at Reed City, 44 miles to the west. US 127 connects with Mount Pleasant, 13 miles to the south, and with Harrison, 14 miles to the north. Michigan State Highway 115 has is southern terminus in downtown Clare.
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,173 people, 1,380 households, and 783 families residing in the city. The population density is 392.7/km² (1,016.7/mi²). There are 1,487 housing units at an average density of 184.0/km² (476.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.35% White, 0.25% African American, 0.60% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.41% from other races, and 0.88% from two or more races. 1.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,380 households out of which 29.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.9% are married couples living together, 13.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.2% are non-families. 38.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.20 and the average family size is 2.92.
In the city the population is spread out with 24.7% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 19.4% from 45 to 64, and 20.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 78.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 72.1 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $27,299, and the median income for a family is $36,194. Males have a median income of $28,365 versus $19,861 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,006. 16.0% of the population and 10.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.3% of those under the age of 18 and 13.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
