Clearing the ears
Clearing the ears in diving or high-altitude flying (i.e. restoring the air pressure in the middle ear to be the same as in the surroundings) can be done in one of these ways that makes the Eustachian tubes open:-
- Valsalva maneuver: hold the mouth and nose shut and try to breathe out.
- With practice, you may learn how to pinch your nose shut without using a hand, by contracting the pair of small muscles called compressor naris that run from the front of the nose cartilage back to the bone of the face beside the nose. Start by wrinkling your nose up as if there was a bad smell.
- Swallowing.
- Yawning, but not if it would make you lose your breathing mouthpiece.
