Cloyne

Cloyne (Irish: Cluain) is a small village to the south-east of the town of Midleton in eastern County Cork in Ireland. It is also a Catholic diocese and part of the Church of Ireland diocese combinded with Cork and Ross.

The village is notable primarily for two reasons. It is the home-place of the great Cork hurler Christy Ring and historically it had a bishopric.

Christy Ring was born in and grew up in Cloyne. He learned to hurl here but Cloyne didn't have a good team then so he moved to play with Glen Rover in Cork city. But he is buried in Cloyne and has a statue there. Cloyne have a senior hurling team now and will contest the Cork Senior Hurling Championship final in Oct 2004. Defender Diarmuid O'Sullivan is a star player.

The Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Cloyne has a Cathedral overlooking Cork harbour in the east-Cork town of Cobh. The Church of Ireland combinded-diocese bishop has his in Cork city.

The village of Cloyne has a round tower which is the village's symbol.
