Cole Prize

There are two Cole Prizes awarded by the American Mathematical Society. The first is awarded to the mathematician who has made an outstanding contribution to algebra. The second is for number theory. They are named after Frank Nelson Cole , who served for 25 years in the American Mathematical Society.

The prizes are not fully international, but are awarded to AMS members and those who publish outstanding work in leading American journals. The award for algebra was first made in 1928 to L. E. Dickson , for his book Algebren und ihre Zahlentheorie, Orell Füssli, Zürich and Leipzig, 1927. The award for number theory was first made in 1931 to H. S. Vandiver , for papers dealing with Fermat's Last Theorem.
