Comfort Stand Records
Comfort Stand Records is an online music site which offers free mp3 selections from a variety of independent artists. To date they have over 51 albums and 20 singles, including some albums which are compilations of tracks from other previous releases. Many of the singles contain non-album b-sides as well.
A generous feature on the site is the ability to download not only complete mp3s from the entire collection of artists, but also to download the entire album, complete with artwork and other notes, in a zipped format. The music falls under a creative commons license, which allows not-for-profit listening and sharing of the tracks.
Actor and webbloger Wil Wheaton, among others, praises the site as a noteworthy one. The act of offering art and / or media for free, non-profit use is a key point in the concept of copyleft ideals.
The company was started in July of 2003 by a young man with the performance name of Otis Fodder. The title is said to have come from a conversation between himself and a friend, Ted, who once exclaimed "Kiddo, you've got yourself a Comfort Stand".
Another site Otis organized was the 365 Days Project , which featured one obscure mp3 for a day during all of 2003. The results, mp3s included, are archived online.
