Cutting (disambiguation)

The word cutting has these meanings:-

  • Separation of a physical object, or a portion of a physical object, into two portions, through the application of an acutely directed force, often applied through a knife; or by melting or burning a gap through it, e.g. by a blowtorch. See Cutting.
  • A cutter is a high-speed sailing ship, so called because it "cut" the water with its speed. It was often used as an official patroller.
  • A type of temporary or permanent body modification, involving slicing the skin with a knife or scalpel, as practiced in modern primitive, BDSM, and goth subcultures, by depressed people as a form of self-harm or catharsis, or by warriors to psych themselves up for battle.
  • A part of a plant removed to propagate a new plant through rooting or grafting.
  • The act of splitting a deck of cards in two after it has been shuffled to prevent cheating; also to select randomly, for instance, where each player cuts the deck and the player with highest value card goes first in a game. See Cut (cards)
  • The name of a commune of the Moselle département in France. See Cutting, Moselle .
  • The act of cutting (a page, a roll of film) is one of the symbols of censorship.
  • A Disc jockey technique, originated by DJ Grandmaster Flash, which is "manually cueing up duplicate copies of the same record in order to play the same passage, cutting back and forth between them." (AMG) This is necessary to isolate and extend breaks into breakbeats. See Cutting (music).
  • An equestrian sport, made popular by cowboys, where the object is for rider and horse to separate a cow from the herd and prevent the cow from returning to the herd: see Cutting (sport) .
  • An excavation to form an artificial canyon, for the ease of road or rail transport: see Cutting (transportation) .
