The 12 teams of three cyclists are split into 6 lots of two who race against each other but the winner will not necessarily go through to the next round as the top eight teams by fastest time qualify for the first round. The first round takes the shape of the fastest team from the qualifying round against the slowest and the second fastest against the second slowest etc.
