Cycling at the 2004 Summer Paralympics

Cycling at the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens, consists of 2 main events: the track cycling and the road cycling. Track cycling takes place at the Olympic Velodrome, road cycling at Vouliagmeni.

87 medals can be won.

Classifications and track cycling

  • B 1-3 Visually impaired athletes
  • LC 1-4 Lower limb and other locomotor disabilities graded by severity. Unusually, the higher numbers here are the more severe conditions.
  • CP1 -4 Athletes with cerebral palsy. 1 and 2 use tricycles, and 3 and 4 use bicycles.
  • HC 1/2 & HC 3/4 are 2 divisions for hand-using athletes, which depend on their degree of paraplegia or tetraplegia.

Track events consist of:

  • Men's pursuit
  • Women's pursuit
  • 3 lap individual sprint
  • 3 cyclist team sprint

Road events are either endurance trials or test time trials.

All disability groups compete in 25 endurance events.

The athletes with cerebral palsy cycle for a minimum of 15 kilometres.

The men with visual impairment cover 120 kilometres.

The distances are the same for each classification in the time trials.
