Dafni (Amaliada), Greece

Dafni (Greek: Δάφνη, meaning "laurel"), sometimes called Daphne, is a village lying in a hilly, forested region on a road between Amaliada and Simopoulo in north-central Ilia, Greece. It is part of the municipality of Amaliada. An archaeological site is near Dafni. Before the 20th century, the village was called Damiza. The settlement is connected with a road connecting Amaliada and Simopoulo to the east. The settlement is situated in a valley area. It is located about 20 km E of Gastouni, about 6 km SW of the Peneus Dam, about 10 km W of Simopoulo, about 30 km NNW of Pyrgos and about 10 km ENE of Amaliada.

The hills are situated to the north with grasslands and mainly bushes and forests and valleys. The groves and some trees lie to the southwest where a main road links to Amaliada with one curve and a small mountaintop with forests. More hilltops lie nearly 300 to 400 m north and to the south as close as 100 m. The valley around Dafni has farmlands consisting of fruits and vegetables and a few groves.

Dafni was one of the most declining villages in population in the prefecture of Ilia. The population revived its growth and were one of the fastest in the prefecture between 1991 and 2001.

Dafni has a small school, a church and a square (plateia).

The entire population prior to the late-20th century were entirely rural and were also farmers. Today, it is still the majority of the population of the settlement.
