Dundee United Football Club is a Scottish football (soccer) club from the city of Dundee. They currently play in the Scottish Premier League and are currently looking for a new manager having sacked Ian McCall.

Originally named Dundee Hibernian, they were formed in 1909 by members of Dundee's immigrant Irish-Catholic community. In October 1923, the club decided to change its name to Dundee United to attract a wider appeal.

They were for many years the less successful of the two Dundee football clubs (the other being Dundee FC), but during the period when Jim McLean served as the club's manager (between 1971 and 1993) they became the premier club in the city. McLean was an astonishingly successful manager, leading United into their most successful period of history, along with assistant manager Walter Smith. In his time as manager they won a league title, several league cups, reached the Scottish Cup Final seven times (though never managed to win it), as well as a European Cup semi-final and a UEFA Cup-final.

In recent years the club has struggled to maintain such success, whilst rivals Dundee FC have become more successful once again, by living beyond their means. This came to a head in November 2003 when it emerged that they were £22 million in debt with no tangible assets and Dundee FC was forced to go into administration (a period which lasted until August 2004).

Their most recent trophy win came in the 1994 Scottish Cup final where a Craig Brewster goal saw off Walter Smith's Rangers.
