Dana Vollmer
Dana Vollmer (born November 13, 1987 in Granbury, Texas) is an American swimmer. She was a member of the United States' 4 x 200-Meter Freestyle Relay team, along with Natalie Coughlin, Carly Piper , and Kaitlin Sandeno, that won the Gold Medal and broke the 17-year-old world record at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. At both the trials for the 2000 Summer Olympics (she didn't make the team), and the 2001 Goodwill Games, Vollmer was the youngest competitor there at the ages of 12 and 13, respectively. Young Dana suffers from a heart condition, the second one she's going through (she already had surgery to repair the first one in 2003). In order to combat this condition, Vollmer must carry a defibrillator with her at all times because this condition causes her heart to randomly stop on occasion. She didn't really need the 2003 surgery, but if she didn't go through with the surgery, she wouldn't be able to swim competitively anymore.
