Danish Melodi Grand Prix

The Danish Melodi Grand Prix (in Danish, Dansk Melodi Grand Prix) is a song contest that has been held since 1957 by Danmarks Radio. The winner of the annual contest represents Denmark at the Eurovision Song Contest.

Denmark did not hold the contest during the period 1967-1977 because Danmarks Radio, the sponsoring broadcast station, did not view the contest as being quality entertainment. Therefore Denmark did not participate in the Eurovision Song Contest during that same period of time. In the years 1994, 1998 and 2003 the Danish Melodi Grand Prix was not held because Denmark had not qualified to participate in those years' Eurovision Song Contests.

Denmark has won the Eurovision contest twice: the first time was with Grethe and Jørgen Ingmann's song, "Dansevise" in London in 1963; the second time was with Brødrene Olsen's (the Olsen Brothers) song "Fly on the Wings of Love", an English language translation of their Danish "Smuk som et Stjerneskud" (literal translation, "Beautiful as a Shooting Star") in Stockholm in 2000.

Tommy Seebach (1979, 1981 and 1993) and Hot Eyes (1984, 1985 and 1988) have each won the Danish Melodi Grand Prix three times, more than any other contestant. Hot Eyes is the only act to have won the contest two years in a row.

  • The song Kun med dig was ultimately not performed at the final of the Eurovision Song Contest in 1996. A semi-final which was not broadcast had been held, and the Danish song was eliminated during this round.
  • In 2004 Sig Det' Løgn (english title: "Shame on You") failed similarly to advance beyond the semi-finals. This time, however, the semi-finals were televised.
