Dark Journey

Dark Journey is the twelfth installment of the New Jedi Order series set in the Star Wars universe. This novel written by Elaine Cunningham was published in 2002.

The Yuuzhan Vong invasion of Coruscant is concluded with that world's fall after a long, pitched battle. Jaina Solo flees to the space of the Hapes Consortium with Vong priest Harrar in pursuit of her as a sacrifice to his gods. Reeling from an emotional loss, Jaina begins to succumb to her anger, and those closest to her fear her to be flirting dangerously with the Darkside.

This book, along with the Force Heretic Trilogy, is regarded as a low point in the NJO. From the pink cover to the out-of-character portrayals of most of the principal people in the story, to the writing at the level of a romance novel, to the casting of Jaina in the vein of "slut with an attitude", Dark Journey earned a lot of ire from the fan community. Luckily, its contributions to the series are unimportant and its events are mostly ignored throughout the other novels. Elaine Cunningham is one of the few authors who participated in the New Jedi Order series who will not be asked back to write in the future, unlike Matthew Stover, Troy Denning, and James Luceno, whose work earned praise from fans and future contracts for Star Wars novels.
